The Two Main Types of Depression
The two main types of depression that may occur are agitated depression and dysphoric mania or dysphoria. Agitated depression, however, is more familiar to all of us than dysphoria. A person experiencing dysphoria will not show symptoms of panic, unlike those that may occur with someone suffering with agitated depression.
Both dysphoria and agitated depression involve the pain suffered from a phobia or fear of a specific object or situation. The phobia is brought on by a person’s overactive imagination — agitation occurs as the person suffers more and more anxiety.
Depression and anxiety often shows up in combination as agitated depression. This form of depression is treatable with antidepressants. Unfortunately, the side effects of antidepressant treatment may be an increased heart rate.
